Surviving the disaster and beyondWhat is the sense of surviving the disaster only to perish from ignorance? It is real simple, cheap and easy to improve your chances of surviving both, the immediate and the long run. Prepare NOW: While you still can. Educate yourself on how to survive, NOT in the woods, or lost at sea, but in your own home. If you were locked inside of your home right now, how long could you survive on the food you have? Without gas, electric, phone or water? Without using your stove, microwave, dishwasher, electric can opener, washer, dryer, vacuum, toilet, shower, lights, fans, AC/heater, TV, radio, PC, laptop, games, DVD players, automobile, everything electric or charged by electric is gone. NO water, sewage, trash collection, no natural gas, no communications or news.. Katrina and New Orleans are a real wake up call, the utilities are still not on in most areas. This is just a very small area, compared to a national disaster, that could do the same to everyone in every city/town across the nation. Does anyone still believe that the electric guys will leave their families to go to work? The water guys? The sewage guys/ trash trucks? Cops? Paramedics? Store owners? Gas station Owners? They could NOT even get the cops, city officials in New Orleans or FEMA organized for weeks... What would happen when its national? Everyone will be on their own.. NO one to call and NO way to call them. I'm old enough and have lived long enough that I could just sit back and say "Oh, Well" for me and George (he might not like that though!!) BUT, could I say the same for my 20 year old daughter? OR my under one year old grandson? I DO NOT think so. I have to prepare for them, I will be the one they turn to should it ever be necessary, I could NOT stand to watch my grandson starve to death, because of my ignorance or lack of foresight... or preparedness. Even for small, personal upsets, be prepared: Example: You injure your back, your insurance won't cover it, the bank repos everything you have, doctors take the rest. You sign up for Food Stamps and SSI. While waiting up to 45 days for FS and up to two years for SSI, your utilities are turned off. How do you survive? Beg, borrow and steal from family and friends? What if they say NO, or don't have it? This IS something that happens everyday in this country to people that didn't think it would. Ask the homeless how they got there! TRUTH: our governmental officials are well fed and totally immune in their positions and do NOT like to be rushed, they relish their time in the limelight, having tax payers pleading with them for the necessities of life. They will take every minute of the time they are allowed to take, with each desk/step taking the entire 30, 60, 90 days. If you should be so BOLD as to call and ask "Since I furnished all the information you requested last week, when will I get assistance?" You will hear, "well, I have up to 60 days to complete my part of your application". THEN it goes to the next desk! OBJECT: Don't look to them for immediate help or assistance... How many are still homeless from Katrina will thousands of mobile homes rot? So, how can you and your loved ones survive?
