So you survived, now what?
 |
The power is off, the world has gone MADD what now? |
IS there any NEWs as to how long it will last, how bad it is,
etc.. You can bet that the answer will be candy coated, during the week or two
that it takes to find out the truth, all of your perishables will have perished,
if you don't take steps to save them.
 |
FIRST, What time of year is it? Winter, Spring, Summer or
Fall? This will determine what and how to preserve the food you have on
hand and how to grow more. WASTE NOT, WANT NOT is very true here.

-
Don't keep opening the refrigerator/freezer just to see
if things are spoiling or the light is off! They ARE SPOILING and the
light is OFF.
-
Calmly sit down with a pencil/paper. FROM memory
write a list of what is in the refrigerator. What will spoil first and
should be eaten right away. Leftovers, dairy products first, green
ripe veggies next, hardier veggies next, etc. KEEPING in mind and
making notes of WHAT has seeds and what will grow.. PLAN for the long term,
not short that everyone is telling you, this is YOUR survival. Example:
4 tomatoes - save seed, plant ten seed NOW, clean/dry all the rest for
planting later. 3 bell peppers, all loose seeded fruits/veggies save
seeds before eating the rest of it. Don't cut them all up at once just to
get the seeds, just save the seeds as you prepare them.
-
NOW for the other veggies/berries that are NOT so
obvious. Squash, carefully remove some of the seeds of larger ones,
eat the rest of the squash. Plant a couple, save the rest.
Strawberries, carefully cut the outer seeds off, eat the rest.
Blueberries, cranberries, kiwi, mangos, papaya, melons, apples, avocados,
save ALL SEEDS. This might be the last time you will see any for a
LONGGGG time.
-
ROOT crops, cut eyes from potatoes, before eating the
rest, plant in vermicomposting kit after they have cured for a few days.
Start sweet potatoes slips by putting root end in jar of water, cut off
sprouts and plant. Garlic plant some bulbs, onions will go to seed, plant
the seeds. Carrot tops, start in small dish, plant when roots appear,
will go to seed, plant seed.
-
Cabbage will grow from just a piece of the core.
Let it go to seed, plant the seed.
-
Beans, Peas, Lentils, Legumes all will sprout right away
and can be planted to eat later and for more seed. Don't forget the popcorn!
-
SPICES: Check your spices/herbs, those that have seeds,
plant. Pre-soaking will help.
When your list is complete for the refrigerator go on to
the next perishables
in the freezer. Then root crops.
 | DON'T Panic, you know how to survive. Remember?
