First weeks survival guide for food, recipes, how to do's.

Your surviving the first few weeks after a local or national disaster can be the governing factor that determines who survives and who doesn't.  There can be lose of power, gas, transportation,  sewage/trash removal, lose of life, home and family.  Depending upon the circumstances, your best chance of survival is if you can remain within your own home and make it livable.

The shelters have proven to be anything but a shelter.  They can become a breeding ground for disease, violence, crime and hunger going to one should be considered a last resort.  If the walls are still standing, your home is the safest, most secure and familiar place to be.  If there is eminent danger of your home being flooded, burned or blown down then do seek shelter elsewhere.

HOME SURVIVAL GAME

Do a test run on your home for a day or two.  If you can NOT survive for a day or two with out using electricity, water, gas and sewage disposal, the chances of you surviving for an extended time is minimal.

bulletHave a family home camping party to determine your and your families likelihood of surviving.  Find out where the problems are NOW, so you can fix them.  After you play this home survival game and do get prepared, try it again in a few weeks to judge the results and any changes you might need to make.

For this game, you DO NOT have water, gas, electric or sewage disposal/removal.  The stores have already been emptied, the car will NOT run.  All communications have failed.

Don't warn your family,  just pick a day at random within the next week, a time on that date at random, use what you have right now, no fair running to the store in anticipation.  This is to determine how prepared RIGHT NOW you are.  So, when you do go to the store you will know where the problems are. A week end might work best, if your family can be home together through out it.

bulletDon't turn your electric off, just pretend that it is off. Tape all the doors to the refrigerator, freezer shut
bullet( in the real deal, the food would be safe to consume for a few days, IF you don't open the doors very much, plan to use it first, before anything in storage).

Turn the AC/Heat off.  Unplug all the electrical appliances.  No dryer. NO CHEATING.  These would be gone.

bulletTape all the light switches off.
bulletTurn the water off by marking all handles, knobs with tape, turn water off to toilet with the water supply line behind it.
bulletReal deal that water in the tank behind the toilet can be used for cooking where it will boil.  The algae looks gross but is harmless. DO NOT Use for cooking if you have a disinfectant/deodorizer in the tank.  Can be used to clean up with instead.

You can easily turn the water off to the faucets using the cut off valves under the sinks.  NO fair using the bathtub or shower.  No washing machine, dishwasher or hot water heater

bullet( the real deal,  the 30 or more gallons of water in the hot water heater can help you survive the first week of so, if you use it very sparingly, it might have sediments in it, but they can easily be filtered out with a coffee filter or clean cloth. Hook up a hose or put a container under the drain and get what you need for immediate use, if the public water system is out, contaminated, etc. TURN the inlet and outlet valves off immediately, so bad water can NOT get in and your water does NOT drain out.
bulletIf you have a gas cook stove, no fair using it, same for the gas igniter/burner in the fireplace.  If you choose to use the propane BBQ, think about how much fuel you will use, how long it will last, same with briquettes.
bulletCell phones have to be recharged, are you sure you want to use it?  Same with the laptop.

Questions to find answer to:

bullet Cooking how will you do it? For a week?  For two weeks?  For months on end?
bulletDish washing how will you do it? For how long before the soap, bleach are gone? What then?
bulletPersonal hygiene how often and how?
bulletLights what will you use and how long will they last?
bulletWhat will you and your family do all day without electronic games, T.V., lights to read by, friends?
bulletHow will you keep clothes, bedding clean?
bulletHow will you dispose of human waste?  Trash?
bulletHow long will the food in your house right now last?  What will spoil when the power is off?
bulletWhere and how will you get water? How much can you get? How can you treat it so that it is safe?
bulletDoes anyone in your family have CPR training?  Do you know what to do for a heat stroke, bleeding, minor or major injuries? What's in your medicine cabinet?

These are questions that need to be answered by you and your family, the answers will greatly increase your chance of surviving the long term.

The winners of this game are the ones that are prepared before its needed.

We take precautions in other areas of our lives to insure our safety and well being by using, seat belts, fire alarms, security systems, auto, life, health insurance, etc... so why shouldn't we be prepared for the worst?

Play the game to win, if you don't prepare now, who will have to share with you because you didn't?  Your friends? Your family? The government ( that has shown it will NOT be there)?  Who will you pull down with you?

The truth is:

bulletEven family and friends might turn on you, if you don't have anything to offer worthwhile, like FOOD, resources.  Even if they prepared, they didn't prepare to care for you, sharing can only go so far before self-preservation kicks in, especially if you are eating up their kids food.
bulletYOU are responsible for YOU, so if you want to survive, then be a survivor instead of a lead weight pulling someone else down.
bulletLearn now what you need to know, just storing some cans of food won't get it, if its for the long term.  Learn how to use vermicomposting to start plants fast, recycle your human and other waste into valuable plant nutrients.
bulletLearn how to sprout seeds, so you can be eating sprouts in a few days, and start growing your own food for survival.  Save some seed for the next batch!
bulletMaybe you don't like what I am saying, but some unselfish, self sacrificing person might have to pay for your lack of responsibility.  So, I don't really care whether you like it or not.  I won't like you when you come beggin at my door, when I did without all the extras, just so I would be prepared for that DAY.

Am I just screaming "wolf", you bet I am, the world is full of wolves. So, are all the government experts, so did Noah, and a bunch others, the signs are all there, you just need to heed them.  Its not a matter of IF, but a matter of when.

Play the game to win.
