Food Storage on a TIGHT
budget.
Since, I personally have been doing this for
years, you can too.
BUDGET: $150.00 per MONTH for two adults for
food to eat now, $30-50.00 to add to survival food storage. Total $50.00 per
week or $200. 00 per month. If you spend more, cut your food budget down
using these simple recipes and lists.
HOW to:
 | I do my major shopping at two different
stores, they are close to each other. One has cheap cans, fresh
veggies/fruits, . The other has cheap meat, larger sizes of staples, and
better choices. Cut trips to store down into 1 major shopping trip and 3
smaller trips (for fresh veggies/fruits) per month. This also helps to stop
impulse buying. A third store that I shop at every few months for
large quantities of some things. The extra you save on just gas alone can be
added to survival storage foods. Keep the trips Down, save gas money! |
 | Make a list, YES it is a pain, but open
your frig, freezer, cupboards and see what you have. So you will know what you
need. Put these items on the list first, what you want is negotiable.
Estimate the prices from past receipts, memory, etc. put a round dollar amount
in each group, this is the major shopping list $120.00 example:
 | Dairy: Cheese, butter, milk, etc.
$20.00. Try making some rice milk, veggie cheese, nut butter yourself, cheap
to make now and you will have the experience necessary when the time comes
that you can't get fresh. |
 | Meat: Pork, chicken, beef, fish $30.00. |
 | Canned: Veggies, fruit, meat, soup
$15.00 |
 | Fresh: Tom., Peppers, squash, pot.,
fruit $20.00 |
 | Dry: Flour, salt, spices, mixes, sugar
$15.00 |
 | Mis: Coffee, tea, mayo, relish, catsup
$15.00 |
 | Extras: $5.00 |
|
How to buy Dairy: $20.00
 | Cheese, I buy three kinds, Monterey Jack,
Cheddar and Mozzarella (for those home made pizzas and snacks. (see Recipes) I
buy in the one pound size, generic brand. Cost approximately $3.30 each
=$10.00. |
 | Butter, I buy one pound of real butter
for veggies, toast. I buy one pound of cheap margarine for cooking, mashed
potatoes, etc. Cost $3.50. |
 | Milk, I don't buy fresh milk any more. I
buy canned evaporated for .50 cents per can and dry powdered milk for about
$7.50 (22 quarts =5 1/2 gallons) . Since I'm lactose intolerant, this
works best for us. If we want a glass of milk with our cookies, by just adding
a small spoon of sugar to the above and ice cold water its hard to tell the
difference, plus I have milk on hand for cooking, dry chocolate drink mix (see
recipe).
