The How to guide on  Survival Cooking Pots, Pans, Utensils, Alternate cooking, Instructions and Equipment list

Having all that stored food is NOT going to do you much good unless you can quickly, easily cook it with a minimum of heat, water and effort.  Is all of this necessary?  Walk into your kitchen, now cook your meals all day, WITHOUT using any gas or electricity, no microwave, stove, oven, refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, etc.. NO cheating.  How good was your meals?  Could you continue preparing and eating them over an extended period of time.  The propane, fuel, briquettes will all run out, there is NOT any guarantee that more will be available for  a long time. The back up generator will need fuel, what then? Using the techniques below can make a difference. If you can get a heat source to bring water to a boil in a tea kettle in a solar oven, over a coffee can stove, a campfire or can of sterno, you can eat.

bullet

Metal thermos bottles

Get some Metal thermos bottles for cooking new or used.  NOW, is the time to play and learn the techniques below, plus you can save on those rising fuel/cooking costs, so you will have more money to stock up with. When the time comes, is NOT the time to experiment with limited resources.

bullet

Metal vacuum thermos bottles (wide mouth is great) can be used to quickly cook pasta, soups, beverages, presoak dried foods.

bullet

The glass lined vacuum bottles  work well also, but break easily so only foods that just need hot water added, such as canned, condensed soups, gravy mixes, non swelling types of foods can be used in glass vacuum bottles.

bullet

Try to have several sizes, from  small to large, where smaller vegetables, meats can be presoaked in hot water, before adding to large thermos with other ingredients. The small travel mugs up to 2 quart size if you can them.

bullet

A good rule of thumb is:

bullet

2 parts water to 1 part dried food = 2cup of re-hydrated product.  Some vary, so experiment and write the results down on the package, so when the time comes you will already have it handy.

bullet

Pre soaking dried foods, be sure to leave plenty of  expansion room in metal vacuum bottles, and shake a few times while soaking to avoid over crowding.  Especially beans, they can swell fast and are a real pain to dig out of a thermos that is packed with them.

bullet

When you light your first cooking fire each day, what ever kind you have.  Put a tea kettle on to heat at the same time, put your ingredients that need to be cooked for dinner into the vacuum bottles, add the boiling water, set in protected space. see below.

bullet

Use hot box: Ice chests, oven, insulated boxes, towels as protected spaces, to further protect the vacuum bottles from air currents and prolong the cooking time.

bullet

Find cheap used metal or glass vacuum thermos bottles at garage sales, flea markets, second hand stores, stored away in picnic, camping supplies, etc..

bullet

The name brand ones can be taken apart and new replacement gaskets, stoppers, etc. purchased to re-furbish them.

bullet

Tea kettle, heats water faster then open pan, use for hot drinks, water for thermos bottles, to sterilize water for drinking, for hot water for washing dishes, showers, etc.. Saves water and cooking fuel.

bullet

Pressure cookers, vacuum cooking pots.
