How to buy meat: $30.00
 | Chicken, I buy the ten pound bags of
legs/thighs for .29 to .39 cents per pound. If I find whole chickens,
breasts on sale, I will buy a couple of them as well, if NOT I don't.

 | Turkey legs, these are usually cheap
.80 cents per pound, they can be baked, Barbequed, boiled for soup, stew.

 | Pork is usually cheap, I buy pork
steaks instead of chops, pork butt roasts about $1.20 per pound. Use these
for stir fry, baked with rice, sausage in a processor, soup, stew,
sweet/sour. |
 | Beef, I buy very little beef, I use
the chuck steaks, roasts for hamburger, sausage, barbeque. Can't
seem to get good steaks at any price anymore! |
 | Fish, I buy large packages of catfish
fillets frozen, I either roll them in cornmeal to fry or corn starch for
stir fry. |
 | Additional tips for meat:
 | Buy large packages that are family
size, put into individual Ziploc freezer bags at home. |
 | Buy cheap cuts if you are going to
add sauces, stew, tacos, spaghetti, stir fry, casseroles or add to
something else. |
 | Check the discounted items, freeze
or use immediately. |
 | IF you want a real steak, buy
cheaper cut, add marinate to freezer bag, before freezing or
refrigerating. It will be tender and ready when you are.

 | Find a store that offers 5 packages
for $19.95, pick the packages with the highest dollar amount, try to get
packages at least $5.00 or more. Check the PER POUND price.

 | Package and Freeze meat ASAP.
Buy the cheaper, generic freezer zip bags, plan on using the meat within
a month. |

How to buy Fresh fruits,
Vegetables.
The golden rule works here, if
it is in season, its usually cheaper, fresher and better.
 | Tomatoes, its real hard to find good
slicing, salad tomatoes anymore, they are hard, rot instead of ripening
and don't have any flavor. So, I buy the cooking type, which slice
well, taste better and also cook well with my squash, bell pepper,
mushroom microwave veggie dish, its great see recipes. Save Seeds |
 | Squash, I buy yellow and zucchini, we
eat these several times a week during season, NO, it is not a mushy mess!
Try this, cut the ends off, put a slit lengthwise, (to release air), pop
into microwave for about 5 minutes or more (depends on yours), put butter
into slit with a little garlic powder, salt, pepper. Its great, see
recipe. |
 | Mushrooms, I mix these with veggie
recipe above, slice for salads, sauté with meat, batter deep fry with fry
basket recipe. Add to casseroles, spaghetti, etc. GOOD for you too! |
 | Garlic use in everything, plant some
of the smaller cloves. |
 | Bell Peppers, use them with
everything almost. Save Seeds |
 | Onions, big bag. |
 | Potatoes big bag. Save eyes. |
 | Greens, collards great with bacon,
sausage or ham added. See Recipe. |
 | Avocado, love them, but can't find
the good, big Calif. kind. Save seed, I have small trees from these. |
 | Cabbage, the stand by, boil with
small potatoes, sausage, carrots. Slap butter on all of it when serving...
great. Cole slaw see recipes. Hard, inner core will grow, plant it! |
 | Carrots, add to rice dish, slaw,
cabbage, carrot cake. |
 | Hot pepper, HE likes them, they
are too hot for me.. Save seeds |
 | Broccoli, Cauliflower I buy frozen,
then I can use it as needed. |
 | Bananas, I buy a bunch almost each
week. Make fritters, cake. see recipe. |
 | Melons, Cantaloupe, Honey dew, these
are pretty expensive, when we do find them reasonable we save the seeds! |
 | Grapefruit, save seeds, I have
several small trees from these. |
 | Oranges, save seeds, I have several
small trees from these. |
 | Apples, save seeds, I have several
small trees from these. |
 | Strawberries, save seeds, I have
several small plants from these. |
 | Kiwis save seeds, I have several
small plants from these. |
 | Papaya save seeds, I have several

plentiful, dry some to use in your own dry soup mixes, get a cheap

Canned Foods: $15.00
 | If its a dollar or more, don't buy it,
think twice! IS my motto. Look for 3 for $1.00 Store Ads. Just
because it is on sale, doesn't mean buy it! Buy the generic brands,
when they are cooked with something else, its hard to tell the difference. |
 | I buy: 12 or more of each when on sale
= $4.00 Use half, store half for survival food storage.
 | French cut green beans. |
 | Cream style corn great for tamale
pie, fritters, see recipes. |
 | Spinach / Greens add to soups,
stews, etc. |
 | Sweet peas use for tuna patties
sauce, etc. See recipes. |
 | Mixed vegetables great for soups,
with rice, casseroles. see recipes. |
 | Stewed tomatoes w/garlic, basil,
spaghetti, casseroles, in tuna salad, etc. |

 | IF it is something I use regularly I
buy a bunch, some for now, some so I won't have to buy it again for a
month or two. Leaves me more money to stock up on something else.

 | When it comes to survival foods, water
can be a major problem, by getting foods now that have water in them can
cut the need for additional water for cooking. |
 | Cooking itself can be a major problem,
in a local or national disaster, precooked foods that can be added
together and cooked quickly is a big plus. SEE fast, recipes. |
 | I use foods that will serve a dual
purpose, eaten alone or added to others. |
