My Past History
With Red Wiggler Earthworms is colorful, and could take
up a whole book.
My Past History
With EX's is Relative, I kept the worms and disposed of
the Husbands! Recycling at its best.....
I bring up the
subject of Ex's, because if it hadn't been for one of
them and his uncanny ability to get me into "unusual
situations" I might not have ever discovered my
life's dream....
Recycling with
earthworms (vermicomposting), and making a good life for
myself and the others that share this "Big Blue
Marble".
"Way Back
in 74", in So. Calif., my husband of the time, told
an elderly, neighbor lady that "we" would
gladly help her with the removal of several trees, which
lined her driveway. We, being me at 5'2" 108 lbs,
and He being 6'2" 215 lbs...
When we arrived
it became quite evident that we couldn't "just"
cut down the trees, we would have to cut them off in
sections, to avoid hitting the roses, fence, garage,
house and her neighbors property. The trees were thin,
spindly things that went straight up. They were not stout
enough to hold the other "half of We" so, I had
to climb the trees and cut them off in sections. Which
finally brings me to the point.
As I enjoyed my
birds eye view of the neighborhood, I noticed that the
neighbors backyard was lined up neatly with a bunch of
covered boxes. When I got down out of the trees, I ask
her what they were (she was anxiously leaning over the
fence, waiting for me to mess up and squish her
wormbeds!) She told me wormbeds, I had never heard of
such and ended up spending the rest of the afternoon
talking to her about them. As my "Other half"
cut up and hauled the trees away!
Thus, was my
first encounter with Red Wiggler Earthworms, I bought a
bed from her and started on my adventure...
A major problem
was: I wanted the vermicompost, not the worms, to sell.
I tried all the
usual means of separating the earthworms from the
castings, I got very little casting, but did get lots of
blisters, sunburns and sore backs..
I continued
buying and setting up conventional earthworm bins/beds
for over 20 years. Each time I would become
disillusioned and give up, for awhile...
Finally, I sat
down one day and decided that the "Separating of the
castings" was definitely a "Wheel" that
desperately needed to be re-invented. That is when, why
and how I designed this NEW Process and bin Design.
I took what I
had learned throughout the years about the earthworms
preferences, breeding habits and idiosyncrasies and
applied them to a design that would keep me from getting
blisters, sunburns and a sore back. I used my head
instead of the rest of my anatomy.
AVSA is the end
result..
It may need
some refinements, but I believe that it is as "Henry
Ford" is to automobiles and the "Wright
Brothers" are to Lear jets...It is a giant step in
the right direction....
Since, my
history is constantly being re-written, check back for
future updates, life goes on.
P.S. I gave up
on the husbands, they didn't understand my Worms!
